Fran Moreland Johns, an OWL member, is a freelance writer who has covered a wide variety of topics, including end-of-life issues. She is the author of Dying Unafraid, a book designed for the lay reader, which grew out of her experiences as a writer, a hospice volunteer and a volunteer with AIDS groups and the elderly. She is currently on the boards of both the San Francisco Interfaith Council and Compassion & Choices of Northern California.
Compassion and Choices of Northern California seeks to educate terminally-ill individuals and their families about their rights to a dignified, humane, and peaceful death.

As President of the Rrepublic of Latvia from 1999 to 2007, she worked to reduce corruption in Latvia, helped grow its market economy, secured Latvia’s membership in NATO and the European Union, improved relations amongst minority groups and increased Latvia’s standing as a dedicated democracy in the world.
Named Special Envoy on the Reform of the United Nations in 2005, Dr. Vike-Freiberga was an official candidate of the Baltic States (Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania) for the position of Secretary-General in 2006. More Americans are working into their retirement years than at any time in the past half century. Fifteen percent of Americans 65 and older are in the workforce today. Some are realizing lifelong dreams of setting up their own business, others have changed jobs or even careers, and many continue to work for their previous employer. The May 15th conference - Easing In & Out of Retirement: Working, Volunteering & Entrepreneurship - will introduce options to help you meet your employment needs. Panels will be offered on identifying career goals, starting a small business, new approaches to volunteering, strategies for overcoming age discrimination, and financial planning.
The conference is presented in collaboration with the Bay Area Career Center, City College of San Francisco Older Adults Program; OWL, SF Chapter; Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center; RSVP; SCORE; The Transition Network; United Administrators of SF - Emeritus; and the United Educators of SF – Retired.

May. 20, Tuesday - Where are we now? Immigration and Labor, Gray Panthers monthly meeting; 12:30 - 3:00 pm; Fireside Room, Unitarian Universalist church, 1187 (at Geary)Bring a snack to share.
On immigration, a legislative stalemate exists between reactionary interests that hope to simply expel immigrants versus liberal business interests, which hope to exploit more immigrants through a Guest Worker program that recreates the 1950s bracero program. So, instead, immigration police are sweeping the nation in workplace raids, and workers are marching on May Day to support immigrant rights.
In labor, a huge fight is developing. Workers will need strong and united action against layoffs and wage cuts as the country goes into recession, yet one of the country’s largest unions is rolling out a strategy of growth through cooperation with corporations and employers.
It is becoming clear that workers’ needs and immigrants’ needs are the same. We will explore these connections and how we can work together to build a movement that improves life for us all.
